How to split a PDF

  1. 1Add the PDF you want to split.
  2. 2Click the scissors between two pages to cut there. To split evenly, type a number in “Cut every” and press Apply.
  3. 3Press Save files. You get one zip file containing a PDF for each part.

When you might need to split a PDF

  • Separate a stack of scanned documents into one file per document.
  • Break a long report into chapters that are small enough to email.
  • Split a yearly bank statement into one file per month.
  • Pull each invoice out of a combined PDF so they can be filed separately.

Tips

  • Cut every 1 page to turn each page into its own PDF.
  • Cut every 2 pages to split double-sided forms into separate files.
  • You can reorder, rotate or delete pages before you split.
  • Only need one section? Extract pages saves just the pages you select.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your PDFs are opened and changed by your own web browser, on your own device. They are never sent to us or anyone else, so nobody can see them. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working.

Why do I get a zip file?

Splitting makes several PDFs. Putting them in one zip means your browser asks you to save once instead of once per file. The parts inside are numbered in order, for example report-part-1.pdf and report-part-2.pdf.

How do I open the zip file?

On Windows and Mac, double-click it to see the PDFs inside. On iPhone, tap it in the Files app. On Android, open it from your Files or Downloads app.

Can I split a PDF into single pages?

Yes. Type 1 in “Cut every” and press Apply. Every page becomes its own PDF.

Can I take just a few pages out instead?

Yes. Use Extract pages to select the pages you want and save them as one new PDF.

Why won’t my PDF open?

Password-protected PDFs can’t be changed here. Open the file in your PDF reader, remove the password, save a copy, then add that copy. Damaged or incomplete files can’t be opened either.

Does it work on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser, including Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
